Things to Do in Karatu

ANCIENT HUNTER-GATHERERS

As previously stated, there are few written guides on what to do in Karatu. In fact, according to Lonely Planet, Karatu is a “charmless town 14 km southeast of Lodoare gate that makes a convenient base for visiting Ngorongoro if you want to save money on entry fees,” and the popular guidebook offers almost no suggestions for things to do.

We wouldn’t call Karatu charming (we wouldn’t call any of Tanzania’s towns charming), but it is a delightful, bustling town that serves as a great stop for a bit of relaxation between game parks and an excellent place to engage in some cultural tourism.
